形態特徵

• Rhizome stout. Culms solid, 3-5 m high, juicy inside, 2-3 cm in diam., nodes numerous, lower internodes shortened, swollen.
• Sheaths imbricate, lower ones falling off at base of culms; blade 4-6 cm wide, midrib prominent, broad, margins serrulate with siliceous bodies; ligule rounded, small. Panicle to 50 cm long; branches racemose, more or less pendent, joint of rachis.
• Easily falling with spikelets when mature. Spikelets paired, monomorphic, one pedicelate and other sessile, ca. 3 mm long; callus with long silky hairs, hairs 2-3 times as long as spikelet; glumes oblong, coriaceous, margins membranaceous, long, ciliate; lower glume keeled along margins; upper glume boat shaped, nearly as long as lower glume; lower lemma oblong-lanceolate, obscurely one-nerved, membranaceous; upper lemma linear, membranaceous, ca. 2/3 as long as spikelet.
• The dyed inflorescence is often use as an ornament. Cultivated extensively in Taiwan.
